With the availability of "unlicensed" bands these days, why bother to operate in a licensed band? In a word...interference. If you are planning on installing radio telecommunication links, or concerned with quality of service and equipment life cycle, this is one of the most important decisions you'll make. One of the reasons the FCC put the licensing system in place years ago was to allow for maximum reuse of channel frequencies in the microwave and millimeter wave bands while providing protection from interference from geographically adjacent users of the spectrum. Today more than ever this proves to be a requirement. Witness the explosive growth of the unlicensed bands at 2.4GHz and more recently 5.8GHz.
